Spring arrives in the Tatras: What to know before your first hiking trips

With the arrival of May, the High Tatras open up to the new hiking season — but nature still demands respect. Several marked hiking trails remain closed until May 31, 2026 as part of the annual seasonal closure protecting TANAP national park flora and fauna during spring reawakening.

The good news is that trails leading to high-altitude mountain huts are open year-round (with the exception of the Chata pod Rysmi hut). We recommend checking current conditions at tatry.sk or in local tourist information offices beforehand.

Note: Some trails remain icy in places and are practically impassable without microspikes or crampons. Spring in the Tatras is stunning, but safety always comes first!
